The keychain toy camera, in a blind box. Tap the box: one of seven shells comes out (one is a secret) and the ones you find are kept. Hold the phone sideways — the camera's back, with a screen so small you frame half by guesswork, or hold the viewfinder window to peer through the plastic tunnel. ON/OFF, shutter, ▲ ▼ for twelve looks (B&W, cool, warm, four pixel tints, film, paint, viewer and '25 frames), ▶ for playback; hold it and your picture opens in a desktop image viewer. 1.6-megapixel photos with the soft plastic lens, the pink-warm cast, blown highlights, heavy JPEG and a big vignette, orange date stamp, saved to Photos as PICT0001. Mini camera, bag charm, y2k.

A 2006 slide-cover slim compact, rebuilt as a live camera. Hold the phone sideways: it opens on the camera's front — slide the metal cover down and it switches on with its start-up chime, then the screen turns to the back: a 2.5-inch LCD that is nearly the whole body, with the T/W rocker, the control pad (flash, lens, timer, view), MENU with five colour modes (Normal, Vivid, Natural, Sepia, B&W), DEL·7M image size and SLIDE·EV. Hold the SHUTTER button under the speaker (or the screen itself) to focus, let go to shoot. The 2006 look: colour that runs hot, crushed blacks, thick sharpening, a flash that washes everything out, and a streak of flare off any bright light. Every shot saves to Photos as DSC0xxxx. Sony T-series style.

The September 2016 iPhone camera, rebuilt as a live camera. Live Photos on and a silent shutter — hold a photo in the roll and it moves. The nine filters in a live 3×3 grid (Chrome, Transfer, Instant, Process, Fade, Noir, Tonal, Mono), flash, HDR, timer, tap to focus and slide the sun. PHOTO and SQUARE. Retina Flash on the selfie camera. The 2016 look, no Smart HDR: bright pale skies, darker shadows, calmer colour, clean detail; indoors it goes soft and grey. Every shot saves straight to your Photos. Old iPhone, vintage iPhone, 2016 aesthetic.

A 2005 five-megapixel CCD compact, rebuilt as a live camera. Hold the phone sideways: the screen is the camera's back, with the 4:3 LCD and the real controls — ring zoom around the shutter, FUNC/SET dial, MENU/DISP/DATE/FLASH keys. Half-press to focus (green frame, beep), press through to shoot. Flash on for the after-dark digicam look, then wait for the recharge. Vivid CCD color, warm skin, soft highlights, orange date stamp. Every shot saves to Photos at 2048×1536. IXUS-style silver compact.

The boxy 1983 instant camera, rebuilt as a live camera. The screen is the camera's front: the lens shows your shot already on Color 600 film, the lighten/darken slider sets exposure, and the red button fires. Hear the motor, watch the print slide out and develop on the table over half a minute. Keep it warm with a finger and it develops faster and warmer. Shake it and the chemistry smears — for good. Write on the border if you like. Every print saves to your Photos with its white frame.

The iPhone 3GS camera from 2009, rebuilt as a live camera. Same viewfinder and toolbar, tap-to-focus with the white square, the iris that closes and reopens on every shot, and the click. Photos come out graded to a 3-megapixel look and save straight to your Photos. Tap the thumbnail to browse your roll.
